Sands China Lends Support to Macau Holy House of Mercy’s
Welfare Shop for Eighth Consecutive Year

Donation helps provide food hampers

(
Macao, March 6, 2020) – Sands China Ltd. donated MOP 300,000 for Macau Holy House of Mercy’s Welfare Shop March 3, to support the distribution of over 360 food hampers to disadvantaged families. It is the company’s eighth straight year supporting the shop’s food hamper distribution.

The hampers contain staple items like rice, noodles, biscuits, canned food, cooking oil, toothpaste, shower gel and others.

Since 2013, the Welfare Shop has been distributing food and essentials each month to help families with financial difficulties. To date, the service has helped provide relief from rising living costs to several thousand households from disadvantaged neighbourhoods.

Sands China has been a major sponsor of the programme since 2013, and has donated MOP 2.3 million to date, including this year’s donation of MOP 300,000.

The company had originally planned to send a group of its Sands Cares Ambassadors to help distribute the hampers in February as it does each year. But in view of the spread of the novel coronavirus, Sands China cancelled the visit in compliance with the Macao’s government’s appeal to avoid gathering in large groups, with the Welfare Shop making special arrangements to distribute the food hampers accordingly.

“Each year, Sands China considers it our privilege and responsibility to show goodwill to the community, including by supporting low-income families through this annual volunteer activity with Macau Holy House of Mercy’s Welfare Shop,” said Dr. Wilfred Wong, president of Sands China Ltd. “And even though the current coronavirus situation meant that we couldn’t be as hands-on as we always like to be, we are glad to have still been able to express our commitment to helping families in financial need through our support of the Welfare Shop. We hope our support can help raise the profile of local charitable organisations and their events, so that more people in Macao can have the opportunity to offer a helping hand.”

Dr. Wong presented a cheque for MOP 300,000 March 3 to António José de Freitas, president of Macau Holy House of Mercy’s General Assembly; Io Hong Meng, president of the Supervisory Committee of the General Union of the Neighbourhood Associations of Macau; and Lei Chan U, vice president of the Board of Directors of the Macao Federation of Trade Unions.

Sands China Ltd. considers initiatives like its support of Macau Holy House of Mercy’s Welfare Shop as central to its commitment toward social causes and community involvement. The company’s community work is part of Sands Cares, the global corporate citizenship programme of parent company Las Vegas Sands Corp.
