Sands Cares Ambassadors Accompany Seniors with Dementia to Visit Londoner Attractions
Community outreach activity in celebration of Mid-Autumn Festival
(Macao,
Sept. 21, 2021) – Sands Cares Ambassadors
celebrated an early Mid-Autumn Festival with community
members last week, hosting over 100 elderly persons with
dementia and their caregivers from Lar de Cuidados "Sol
Nascente" da Areia Preta for activities at The
Londoner®
Macao.
From Tuesday
through Thursday last week, groups of Sands Cares
Ambassadors treated the elderly guests and their
caregivers to lunch at the Crystal Jade La Mian Xiao
Long Bao restaurant at The Londoner Macao. Sands China
team members had made special arrangements in
consideration of their guests, in terms of dining
options, cooking methods, and presentation, to ensure
the seniors were taken good care of. As an example, the
meals of some of those with severe dementia were
specially prepared according to dietitians' and
caregivers'
advice.
They then took
them on a guided tour of The Londoner Macao, starting
with enjoying entertainment at the integrated resort's
ornate Crystal Palace atrium, followed by visits to some
of The Londoner's signature spots for
photography.
The centre's
elderly residents haven't been able to go for outings
over the last few months because of the pandemic; and
due to the challenges associated with dementia, some
haven't ventured out for two years, so the activity with
the Ambassadors was especially
significant.
A week prior
to the activity, the participating Sands Cares
Ambassadors attended a two-day workshop on dementia,
conducted by representatives from the Sol Nascente
centre. They learned more about seniors with dementia
and received tips to help take care of them during their
visit to the property and learned how to take them
around safely.
"Caring for
the elderly is a virtue that our community treasures,
and it is also an important part of what we like to
express through Sands Cares," said Dr. Wilfred Wong,
president of Sands China Ltd. "So it is especially
meaningful for us that our Sands Cares Ambassadors were
able to bring a day of good cheer to this vulnerable
group by enabling them to experience some of the wonder
of our themed resorts, and to transport them to a
European setting for a few hours. Our gratitude goes to
Lar de Cuidados "Sol Nascente" da Areia Preta for their
collaboration on this initiative and to our volunteers
for their continued acts of goodwill on behalf of the
company."
Irene Cheang,
director of Lar de Cuidados "Sol Nascente" da Areia
Preta, said: "I would like to express my appreciation to
Sands China for their caring and considerate
arrangements. From dining to assistance to wheelchair
users, Sands China team members' attention to detail
enabled the seniors with dementia to tour around a
European setting in a comfortable way. This pleasant
experience has brought laughter to their
faces."
The Sands
Cares Ambassador programme was established in August
2009 to give Sands China team members an outlet for
serving the local community by organising community
activities and initiatives that work toward creating a
better Macao. With membership of more than 3,300
volunteers from across all Sands China properties –
Sands® Macao, The Venetian® Macao,
The Plaza® Macao, The Parisian Macao and The
Londoner Macao – the Sands Cares Ambassadors have
contributed more than 130,000 hours of voluntary
community service since the programme's
founding.
Sands China
Ltd. considers initiatives like last week's outing as
central to its commitment toward social causes and
community involvement. The company's community work is
part of Sands
Cares, the global corporate citizenship
programme of parent company Las Vegas Sands
Corp.
