Successful 2022 Sands Shopping Carnival Draws in Residents and Tourists

Three-day family-friendly event once again attracts more than 100,000 visits

(Macao, Sept. 14, 2022) – The 2022 Sands Shopping Carnival came to a successful close Monday at The Venetian® Macao's Cotai Expo, after its three days of shopping, activities and entertainment attracted more than 100,000 visits. The annual event has attracted over 310,000 visits since its debut in 2020.

Coinciding with Mid-Autumn Festival this year, the popular event is in its third year. It officially kicked off on Saturday with an opening ceremony attended by guests of honour from the Liaison Office of the Central People's Government in the Macao SAR, the Macao SAR government, and the finance and business sectors.

The free-admission Sands Shopping Carnival is the largest sale event in Macao, and this year's event featured over 530 booths, providing a free business platform for local SMEs and Sands retailers impacted by the pandemic. Exhibitors expressed their gratitude for the swift rescheduling of this year's event following the local outbreak in June; they attributed the popularity of the event to the comprehensive arrangements and supporting facilities of the carnival, which have helped boost their revenues.

Offering an exciting weekend destination for local residents and tourists, the carnival supports the Macao SAR government's Consume for the Economy initiative and consumption e-voucher scheme. The event provided free shuttle service and round-the-clock free parking at guest carparks at all of Sands China's Cotai Strip properties, offering convenience for local residents and tourists.

Carnival visitors were able to browse eight zones, all of which offered the convenience of accepting consumption e-vouchers: Sands retailers; household products; family fun products; gourmet; healthy lifestyle; sports accessories; cultural, creative and IP; and Bank of Communications presents: "Play and Fun" Kids Area. MOP 1 products and discounts of up to 90 per cent off were part of the shopping fun as well.

One big highlight of the carnival was the ICBC ePay Presents: Karaoke King Singing Competition 2022. Featuring adult and teenage categories, the annual competition has attracted close to 380 registrants over three editions. Chan Chong Iok, Lao Tou Fu, and Ieong Tak Ian were the winner, runner-up and second-runner up, respectively, in the adult category, while Chen Meng Hei, Feng Qi Hui, and Ao Ian In were the winner, runner-up and second-runner up, respectively, up in the teen category.

New this year was the BNU Presents: Street Dance Competition 2022, which was held on Sept. 10. It gave 81 young dance enthusiasts a platform to showcase their talents, with 13 teams of 3-8 participants competing on Saturday. Their amazing skills drew big crowds, with HH Runner @ TDSM Kid Dance winning first place, and Ghidorah'Z and Mini Phoeni'z taking second and third place, respectively.

The always popular BOC Smart Kids Presents: Little Master Chef Workshop was back again this year, with over 570 participants joining the free food-prep and decorating activity. Led by Sands China's food and beverage team, children and parents worked together to make pizzas, wrap pork siew mai, and more.

In order to raise awareness of proper recycling at the event and contribute to recycling in Macao, a group of Sands ECO360 Ambassadors demonstrated effective methods for recycling cardboard, plastic and metal for exhibitors. The vendors learned practical knowledge and techniques for recycling, such as better sorting and making sure the items for recycling are clean. As a result, more than 3,200 kilograms of recyclables were collected at the carnival.

The recycling effort was carried out in conjunction with Green Future, Sands China's partner NGO in the Sands Cares Accelerator Program – through which Sands China has supported the nonprofit through a variety of development opportunities and by further strengthening its community impact.

Several sanitisation and safety protocols were in place throughout the weekend event to maintain a safe, healthy, and worry-free environment, including temperature checks, mandatory face masks and health code checks, among many other measures.

The 2022 Sands Shopping Carnival was organised by Sands China Ltd., co-organised by the Macao Chamber of Commerce, supported by the Economic and Technological Development Bureau, the Macao Government Tourism Office, and the Macao Trade and Investment Promotion Institute, and sponsored by Bank of China Macau Branch, ICBC (Macau), BNU, and Bank of Communications Macau Branch.
