Sands China Makes MOP 1.08 Million Donation for Scholarships and Fellowships to Local Tertiary Institutions

17-year initiative has now benefited more than 1,700 students


(Macao, Oct 16, 2023) – Sands China Ltd. presented MOP 1.08 million in ceremonial cheques to representatives of seven higher education institutions at a ceremony at The Venetian® Macao Sept. 27, as part of the company's ongoing support of higher education in Macao. It is the annual initiative's 17th consecutive year of providing scholarship and fellowship money to Macao tertiary institutions.


"Sands China is very pleased to support higher education in Macao, as it is essential for nurturing the thriving of local youth," said Dr. Wilfred Wong, president of Sands China Ltd. "We hope these yearly donations help enrich the pool of diversified talent in Macao and inspire students to strive for excellence in their academic endeavours, paving the way for their successful careers."


Including this year's donation, Sands China has donated MOP 14.6 million for tertiary scholarships and fellowships in Macao since 2006, benefitting more than 1,700 students. The educational institutions select beneficiary students based on their academic performance and financial status during the previous academic year. This year's MOP 1.08 million donation will be distributed among 108 students to support their studies for the current academic year.


Sands China representatives presented the ceremonial donation cheques Sept. 27 to Carol Wong Kei, director of the rector's office of the University of Macau; Antonio Chu Chan Weng, acting registrar of Macao Institute for Tourism Studies; Irene Lei Vai Fong, secretary-general, Alice Lao Weng Ian, head of the student affairs office, and Kay Lam Cheng Man, senior administrative officer of the public relations office for Macao Polytechnic University; Remus Wong Ka Weng, head of the student affairs office of Macau University of Science and Technology; Keith Morrison, vice-rector, Alejandro Salcedo Garcia, administrator, and Derek Wong, officer of the office for student and alumni affairs for University of Saint Joseph; Wu Yu, head of registry, and Wang Lirong, senior supervisor of registry for City University of Macau; Alex Mok, president of the board of directors, and Winnie Lio, senior administrative officer of Macau Institute of Management.
