Sands China Achieves Five Top 10 Rankings in CUHK Business Sustainability Indices (BSI)
Includes Top 5 ranking in Greater China Hotel BSI
(Macao, Dec 26, 2023) – Sands China Ltd. has earned five Top 10 rankings in this year's Business Sustainability Indices (BSI), highlighted by a Top 5 ranking in the 3rd Greater China Hotel Business Sustainability Index (Hotel BSI).
Launched in 2015, the BSI rankings are determined each year by the Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) Business School, promoting business practices that contribute to positive social and environmental impact. This year, the BSI examined the sustainability performance of 371 listed companies, with its methodology analysing three areas: value, process and impact. This includes looking at a corporation's vision, management skills, and influence on society, the environment and its stakeholders.
"Sands China is very pleased that our business sustainability efforts continue to put us among the top performers in our industry and beyond," said Sean McCreery, executive vice president of operations for Sands China Ltd. "It is also very encouraging to see an improvement in our performance with Sands China added to one additional index this year, totalling five, and we achieved Top 10 rankings in all of them. The company's gratitude goes to our outstanding team members, who ensure that our sustainability strategies translate into effective action each and every day across our operations."
For its Top 5 ranking in the Hotel BSI, Sands China is one of only five companies out of 38 that performed at the Pace-setter level, which was the highest level awarded in the Hotel BSI this year. The Pace-setter designation means that Sands China has built a mature, socially responsible management system, adopts a comprehensive business sustainability approach, and demonstrates corporate social responsibility performance that is substantially above average for a firm.
In addition to ranking Top 5 in the 3rd Greater China Hotel Business Sustainability Index (Hotel BSI), Sands China achieved four other rankings this year, all of which were Top 10 and at the Pace-setter level, with the company ranking highest among all integrated resort/hotel operators in each category:
- Ranked 6th in the 1st Global Asia-Pacific Business Sustainability Index (GCBSI), and the only integrated resort/hotel operator in the Top 20
- Ranked 6th in the 8th Hong Kong Business Sustainability Index (GCBSI)
- Ranked 6th in the 4th Greater Bay Area Business Sustainability Index (GBABSI)
- Ranked 7th in the 3rd Greater China Business Sustainability Index (HKBSI), and the only integrated resort/hotel operator in the Top 20
Sands China has also been awarded a Special Mention in the Environmental, Social, and Governance section (Hang Seng Index Category) of the prestigious Hong Kong Institute of Certified Public Accountants' 2023 Best Corporate Governance and ESG Awards. Through the Awards, the Institute aims to encourage listed companies and significant public sector organizations to give equal importance to achieving high standards of corporate governance (CG) and environmental, social, and governance (ESG) practices and reporting.
Sands China's sustainable business practices are carried out under the People, Planet and Communities corporate social responsibility platform of parent company Las Vegas Sands Corp. Sands China's variety of initiatives include programmes such as the Sands ECO360 global sustainability programme; the Sands Cares corporate giving and community engagement programme; and the Sands China Academy, a team member professional development programme.
