Sands China Hosts Special Screening of Movie ‘Dear You’
Specially organized for Sands Cares Ambassadors, local teachers and students, and NGO members
Promoting Chinese virtues and fostering a deep love for the country and Macao
(Macao, Jun 18, 2026) – The movie “Dear You,” currently a box-office hit in the Chinese mainland, officially premiered in Macao Thursday. On premiere day, Sands China hosted the Love for Home and Nation – Sands Cares Presents: Screening of “Dear You” event, inviting Sands Cares Ambassadors and other community volunteers, local teachers and students, and NGO members for an early viewing of the film. It depicts the heartfelt story of the struggles and family bonds of overseas Chinese from the Chaoshan region. Through this screening, Sands China hopes to encourage community members and its volunteer team to draw spiritual strength from the film’s emotional resonance, while also nurturing students’ nationalism and sense of pride for Chinese culture, thereby strengthening community and family cohesion.
Set against the historical backdrop of the early modern-era migration of Chinese from Chaoshan to Nanyang (Southeast Asia), Lan Hongchun, director of “Dear You,” skilfully portrays the hardships of Chinese emigrants making a living in foreign lands in a simple yet poignant narrative style. Using “qiaopi” (remittance letters sent home by overseas Chinese) as a narrative thread, the movie gently unfolds stories of resilience, perseverance, and deep familial bonds carried by those who left their homeland behind. It recounts the arduous toil undertaken by Chinese migrants abroad, who lived frugally to send their hard-earned savings, accompanied by letters that carried the reassurances of safety and longing for their families back home. In doing so, the film celebrates the traditional Chinese virtues of morality, while also illustrating the deep responsibility and devotion overseas Chinese have for families in their homeland, and the spirit of mutual support that binds Chinese migrant communities.
The film has been stirring intergenerational sentiments and memories among masses of viewers since its April release in the Chinese mainland, surpassing RMB 1.7 billion in box office revenues.
This special screening saw nearly 200 participants, including Dr. Wilfred Wong, executive vice chairman of Sands China Ltd., other senior executives, Sands Cares Ambassadors, teachers and Form 6 students from Tong Sin Tong Middle School, and members of the General Union of Neighbourhood Associations of Macau, Women’s General Association of Macau, and Macao Federation of Trade Unions. Together, they watched this cinematic masterpiece that embodies rich cultural heritage, celebrates the emotional bonds of overseas Chinese communities, and promotes outstanding cultural values.
Dr. Wong said: “More than just a deeply moving film, ‘Dear You’ vividly portrays the strong sense of nationalism that lies at the heart of Chinese culture. Through its delicate storytelling, the movie brings to life Chinese traditional virtues such as integrity, credibility, and familial devotion. The film profoundly resonates with Chinese communities around the world, celebrating our spiritual heritage and the deep emotional bonds that unite overseas Chinese with their homeland – values that are incredibly important to preserve for future generations. For this special screening, we brought together nearly 200 participants, including members of community organisations, secondary school teachers and students, and our Sands Cares Ambassadors, to appreciate the genuine emotion and enduring ties between overseas Chinese and the motherland – thereby fostering community cohesion, spreading positive energy, and promoting the virtues of community care, family devotion, and mutual inclusivity. Sands China will continue to inject warmth and vitality into the community through diverse cultural initiatives, extending the Sands Cares spirit of dedication to all.”
Launched in August 2009, the Sands Cares Ambassador programme became the first volunteer initiative established by an integrated resort operator in Macao. It now has more than 4,000 volunteers from across all Sands China properties, who have collectively contributed over 360,000 hours of volunteer service, demonstrating the company’s steadfast commitment to carrying out its corporate social responsibility and giving back to the community.
